Former International Senior Scotland Yard Detective, Crisis Negotiator and Kidnap Investigator
As a Scotland Yard detective Suzanne Williams was the only senior officer to be in charge of both the Kidnap and the Hostage Crisis Negotiation Units. At the highest level, she has been an active contributor to the UK Government’s crisis response process in cases of the kidnap/abduction of UK citizens overseas. Many of these cases evolved in the media spotlight others were resolved covertly, all demanded careful family support, innovative negotiation strategies and good communication to the perpetrators and other stakeholders.
Prior to that posting she also formed part of the Royalty Protection Group senior management team working from Buckingham Palace. Her role included security preparation for annual major events, crisis management for spontaneous incidents and detailed plan writing for the response to serious crime against members of the Royal Household.
Sue qualified both in the UK and USA as a Hostage Negotiator 25 years ago, in that time she has contributed to the successful resolution of hundreds of kidnaps, hostage situations on land and the high seas. She has deployed in every continent and has returned former hostages home from many parts of the world.
Sue is an experienced Senior Investigator for kidnaps and was awarded the Queen’s Police Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours in 2003, this was in recognition of her commitment to the fields of kidnap, negotiation and saving of life. Due to her extensive experience in these areas she is currently called upon to assist and advise many foreign governments, organisations, and individuals experiencing similar crimes in action and critical incidents. .
Sue is a visiting lecturer at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative in Boston, USA, where she works with the international aid sector developing crisis teams and ensuring kidnap response documentation is fit for purpose. She is also a retained crisis management advisor to International Maritime Bureau in London.
Sue is also a Visiting lecturer at the University of Oxford’s Said Business School, where she presents on Negotiation.
